Chick-It-Out Hatching Program

This event has ended. Celebrate National Library Week with us with baby chicks! Come "chick out" our library's delivery of a dozen eggs from Quiver Farm at our library. Watch the amazing process of eggs hatching into chicks in our library and live from a webcam here on our website. Discover chick related books, activities and science information. Vote to name our chicks and predict which egg will hatch first on Facebook and in our library.

Our chicks have been named! Check out our birth annoucements here.

Our chicks have left for the farm and are no longer at our library. Thank you for visiting our chicks for our hatching program and making great memories with us!

Attend Our Chick Events

Meet our live chicks on Thursday, April 12th at 1pm, 4:30pm and 7pm. Hear a story about chicks, do a scavenger hunt and hold a chick. RSVP is required by clicking Attend Our Chick Events above.

Read to the Peeps!

Sit in our chair next to our eggs with your favorite story like Miss Jackie did here. Take photos of yourself and your family reading to our eggs or chicks and share on our Facebook and Instagram platforms with the hashtag #parklandpeeps.

The Science Behind Chick Hatching

Chick Hatching Timeline (from Quiver Farms):

  • The incubation of a chick is 21 days long

  • Between day 15 and 16, the chick orients itself so that it’s beak is near the air cell at the large end

  • About day 19, the chick thrusts its head forward breaking through the inner shell membrane and the lungs begin limited functioning

  • By the end of the 20th day, the chick is breathing completely through its lungs

Hatching Eggs: A Step by Step Guide

Learn more about the life cycle of the chicken here

This is a great video to show your kids as they eagerly await the hatching of the chicks. It’s hard for kids to understand what is happening inside the egg and this short video does a fantastic job highlighting the embryo development over the 21-day incubation period.
