Summer Reading Club - June 8th - August 11th, 2009

Thanks for a Great Summer, everyone!

 

    

Rules:

1.  Children and teens as young as 2 and as old as 17 can join the Summer Reading Club.  (Click on age levels above for more information.)

2.  Reading Club members can join the Summer Reading Club online or by coming into the library from June 8, 2009 on.

3.  Reading Club members read and listen to books, books on tape or CD, online books and keep track of the time spent reading and listening online.  (Youth Services staff and volunteers can answer questions about the online tracking software.)

4.  Reading Club members earn prizes depending on how much reading and listening time they track online.  Check each age group to find out what prizes will be awarded when.  The last day to track reading and listening time is August 8, 2009.

5.  Reading Club members can earn prizes for solving Library Mysteries, doing Oral Book Reports, and completing Incentive Sheets.   These activities are Optional.

6.  Reading Club members can attend Programs at the Library, and Stories in the Schools Programs.  These programs are Optional.  The FINAL PARTY is Dance, Dance, Dance on August 11th at 6:30 pm at Jordan Lutheran Church in Orefield.

Read-with-Me Club

Children as young as 2 years old through entering grade 2 can join the Summer Read-With-Me program:

Children earn prizes for listening to or reading books with their family and caregivers.  Read-With-Me members will earn prizes for:

    The 1st logged entry - a small prize (sticker, bookmark, etc.)

    5 hours (20  15-minute blocks)  logged - a paperback book

    10 hrs. (40 15-minute blocks) logged - a special craft prize (while supplies last)

    Every 5 hours (20 additional 15-minute blocks) after - small prize (while supplies last)

   Read-with-Me Club members who have logged time since their last visit can add a note to our musical score when they visit the library.

Children and their adults can attend programs at the Parkland Community Library and in the Parkland elementary schools.

Families can solve puzzles and play games at the Parkland Community Library throughout the summer.

KidsRead

Readers entering grades 3 through 7 can join the KidsRead program:

Readers earn prizes by reading and/or listening to books.  KidsRead members will earn prizes for:

    1st logged entry - small prize (sticker, bookmark, candy, etc.)

    5 hours (20 15 minute blocks) logged-  other small prizes

    10 hours (40 15-minute blocks) logged - a paperback book

    15 hours (60 15-minute blocks) logged - a craft prize

    Every 5 hours (20 additional 15-minute blocks)  after - small prize (while supplies last)

    30 hours (120 15-minute blocks) logged - name posted on the wall.

    KidsRead members who have logged time since their last visit can add a note to our musical score when they visit the library.

Programs are held at the Parkland Community Library and at the Parkland elementary schools for all ages.

Readers entering grades 3 through 7 can sign up for workshops.

Puzzles and mysteries are posted in the library for KidsRead members to solve.

TeenRead

Readers entering grades 8 through 12 are welcome to join our TeenRead program.

Teens earn prizes for reading books, magazines and other printed materials and for listening to books on CD or to downloadable books.  TeenRead Members will earn prizes for:

    1st logged entry - small prize (bookmark or food)

    15 hours logged - paperback book

    20 hours logged - craft prize

    Every 5 hours logged after - small food prize (while supplies last)

   TeenRead members who have logged time since their last visit can add a note to our musical score when they visit the library - if they choose.

Teens can participate in the Story Creation Project throughout the summer.  Writing, visual arts, even songs and music can be part of this project.  Look in the YA section for Writing and Art Challenges throughout the summer.

Volunteer! Teens can volunteer at the Parkland Community Library during the summer and throughout the year.

Program Schedule  (Past programs have been moved to the end.)

Saturday, August 8th10:30 to 1:30 - Book Signing!  Katelyn Sheinberg will be here to sell and sign copies of her book, The Treasure Trove Tales : at the Gazebo.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the friends of the Parkland Community Library to help fund programs.  Katelyn's book is suitable for children in grades 4 and up.  It is the story of five children who deal with grief and loss when they find a treasure that puts them in touch with their memories.

Saturday, August 8th – all day.  Last day to log books. 

Tuesday, August 11th – 6:30 pm – Final Party.  Dance, Dance, Dance!  A live DJ and dance team members will make this party rock!  At Jordan Lutheran Church on Snowdrift Road in Orefield.

Saturday, August 15th – 7 to 9 – Teen Volunteer Pizza Party.  For Teen Volunteers and Library staff members ONLY.  Please sign up in advance.

The Programs below are over and done.

Saturday, May 30th – 10 am to noon – Training for teen volunteers.

Thursday, June 4th – 6:30 to 8:30 pm – Training for teen volunteers.

Monday, June 8th – Summer Reading Club AND sign-ups start.  Sign-ups and log-ins can be done ONLINE.

Tuesday, June 23rd through July 30th  – Stories in the Schools (SIS) begins.

Tuesday, June 16th at 7 pm - Teen Advisory Board meeting.  Get ready for the Big Build and the Big Breakdown.

Saturday, June 20th - 11 am to 2 pm - Teen Story Creation Workshop.  Teens entering grades 8 through 12 can create the beginning of the summer-long Story Creation Project.  Library staff and volunteers will lead writing games, story board sessions and other activities to get creative juices flowing.  Advanced registration is required.  Attendance is limited.  Bring a lunch.  Sign-up in person at the Parkland Community Library from June 8th on.

Monday, June 22nd through July 11th - Library Mystery #1.  Guess what artistic items are inside each Touchbox.  Library Mysteries will earn participants Gift Basket chances.

Tuesday, June 23rd,  – 4 to 7 pmMake OR Take - Puppets. Stop by to make a simple puppet, listen to stories and play with puppets.  Or take the craft home with you.  This program meets on the front lawn. For all ages.

Thursday, June 25th6:30 pm – The BIG BUILD.  Help build the biggest box sculpture, the longest paper chain and other enormous things.  Bring your own box!  On the library lawn.  Rain location is the large meeting room at the South Whitehall Township Building.  For all ages

Wednesday, July 1st, July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd 6:30 to 7:30 pm Read to the Pups! Certified Therapy Dogs from the Greater Lehigh Valley Therapy Dog Club will be ready to listen to beginning readers.  This program is for early readers - or anyone who needs to practice reading out loud.  Please sign up in advance at the Parkland Community Library.  On the front porch unless there is extreme weather. 

Monday, July 6th, July 13th, July 20th, July 27th - 11 am to noon - Read to the Pups!   More Therapy Dogs will be ready to listen to beginning readers.  This program is for early readers - or anyone who needs to practice reading out loud.  Please sign up in advance at the Parkland Community Library.  On the front porch or lawn unless there is extreme weather.

Tuesday, July 7th, - 4 to 7 pm - Make OR Take - Music.  Stop by to make a simple music maker.  Listen to stories and play with musical instruments.  Or take the craft home with you.  This program meets on the front lawn.  For all ages.

Monday, July 13th through Saturday, July 25th - Library Mystery #2.  Find the paintings that the figures come from.  Library Mysteries will earn participants Gift Basket chances.

Monday, July 13th through Thursday July 16th  - 10 am to 1 pm Funny Storytelling Workshop for readers entering grade 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  Join Teens Telling Tales and learn jokes, funny stories, pratfalls, gags and hilarious skits.  Advanced registration is required.  Attendance is limited to 20 children).  Bring a lunch.  Sign-up in person at the Parkland Community Library from June 8th on.  This program will be held at Jordan UCC on Church Road.

Thursday, July 16th – 6:30 pm – Comedy Night. Featuring Larry Sceurman and the Funny Storytelling Workshop! All ages.  Bring your funniest jokes to tell.  (All jokes must be screened.) Watch Teens Telling Tales and their workshop students perform skits and tell funny stories.  Larry Sceurman will MC.  For all ages.

Tuesday, July 21st, Make OR Take - 4 to 7 pm - Wet Wool Beads.  Stop by to make a simple wet wool craft.  Kim Chatel will read her book, Rainbow SheepFor all ages.

Monday, July 27th through Saturday, August 8th - Library Mystery #3.  Find puzzle pieces and the paintings they belong to hidden all around the library.  This mystery will take the best detective skills.

Tuesday, August 4th - 5 to 6 pm - Photo Workshop with Kim Chatel For ages 8 and up (or 6 and up with a parent).  Registration in advance is required.  Attendance is limited to 24 children.  Sign-up in person at the Parkland Community Library from June 8th on.  Bad weather location will be at the South Whitehall Township Building.  Sponsored by Dan's Camera Shop.

 

 

 

 

Oral Book Reports, Gift Baskets, Mysteries, etc.

    Members of the Read-with-Me and KidsRead Clubs can earn Gift Basket Chances by giving an Oral Book Report to a Summer Reading Club volunteer.  Roll the Book Report Dice and answer the question that comes up.  Two questions must be answered to get a basket chance.

    Gift Baskets: three times during the summer, baskets filled with books, toys and other neat stuff, will be chanced off.  Reading club members can earn basket chances by giving an Oral Book, or filling out an Incentive Game.

    Incentive Game:  Print out an Incentive Game sheet and do eight of the activities on it to earn 2 basket chance.

    Library Mysteries:  Three times during the summer, Summer Reading Club members will get chances to solve a mystery in the library.  Completed mysteries earn 2 gift basket chances.  CORRECT mystery sheets will go into a drawing for a separate prize.
