The Ocean is Full of Strange Sharks
Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)
The mysterious cold water-dwelling Greenland shark lives at least 250 years. In fact, they may live over 500 years. Scientists have had a recent breakthrough in determining the age of these sharks. They can carbon-date the proteins in a shark’s eyes! Read more at the NOAA site.
Dwarf Lantern Shark (Etmopterus perryi)
The world’s smallest known shark, a dwarf lantern shark, is smaller than a human hand. This deep-water species lives in depths of 928–1,440 feet. It has light-emitting organs called photophores along its belly and fins for camouflage when they feed in shallower water. Watch a clip from NOAA.
Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni)
Dating back to 125 million years ago, goblin sharks are sometimes called the “living fossil.” They are the only surviving members of their family, Mitsukurina. These strange sharks vary in color from pink-grey to bubble gum pink or can even be translucent, where their capillaries can be seen. Their jaw can protrude to snatch prey just out of reach and open their mouth to a 111-degree angle. Read more about it here.
