Kokeshi are simple wooden Japanese dolls with no arms or legs that have been crafted for more than 150 years. Originally from the northeastern region of Japan, they are handmade from wood, having a simple trunk and head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face.

Stop by your library all month long to pick up your kit. *Please note: We will have a limited number of each kit available for pick up. All kits will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Project Materials:

  • Wooden Kokeshi Dolls
  • Paint brush
  • Paint set
  • Toothpicks (for details)
  1. Place down some newspaper or paper towels before you begin to paint your wooden kokeshi doll.
  2. Use the end of a toothpick to paint a hair outline on top of the head, then use a paintbrush to fill in the rest of the hair. Allow to dry.
  3. When you are happy with the hair design, start creating the outfit! You can use the template provided for hair and outfit ideas! Tip: Use the toothpicks to make small X’s on the clothing to make a cute design.
  4. When you are finished with the clothing and hair, don’t forget to add the eyes! Use a clean toothpick to draw on eyes, you can even add eyelashes.
