Youth Services Library & Outreach Assistant (Part-Time) 

  • 20 per week (Schedule may vary from 19-27 hours per week). 
  • Flexible schedule including one Saturday per month required (example: Tues. 9am-3pm: Wed. 9am-3pm; Thurs. 9-4; Saturday 9-5).
  • Additional Availability on Fridays & Saturdays for program and outreach hours are required
  • ● $13-$15 per hour based on education and experience 

The Parkland Community Library seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, and creative educator to join its staff as a Youth Services Library & Outreach Assistant. The ideal candidate will be skilled at searching for and retrieving library materials, planning and executing storytimes and events for preschool and elementary-aged children, and willing to assist with furthering the library’s mission and strategic plan. The Youth Services Department at Parkland Library serves youth from birth through age 18 and their parents. 

 Reports to: Head of Youth Services Librarian 

Job Summary: Currently, PT nonexempt 

Staff the public desk in the Youth Services department. Assists library users. Performs library programs in the library and offsite. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Monitor the Children’s Wing and maintain a safe, attractive environment for library patrons. 
  • Assist patrons with locating library materials and reader’s advisory services. 
  • Retrieve patron requests utilizing the Evergreen Integrated Library System (processing holds). 
  • Promote library programs/services and register children and teens for programs. 
  • Perform storytimes in the library and the community, including reading aloud engagingly and entertainingly, singing, dancing crafts, and related activities. 
  • Assists with collection maintenance, including displays and shelf reading.
  • Supervise teen summer volunteers. 
  • Shelve materials when needed. 
  • Additional tasks as assigned.

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks 
  • Proficient with SPARK Evergreen & Google Workplace. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Two years of college preferred; will consider a high school diploma or GED and experience. 
  • Experience working with youth and familiarity with libraries, youth literature, children’s music, and children’s activities by age/ability. 

Physical and Mental Requirements: 

  • Must be able to complete tasks in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises 
  • Ability to operate computers with proficiency using library software, word processing, and the Internet 
  • Ability to view a computer monitor and operate a keyboard for extended periods 
  • Ability to lift materials weighing up to 25 pounds and push carts carrying materials weighing up to 100 pounds 
  • Ability to move throughout the building to access materials 
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for necessary periods 
  • Ability to communicate with patrons and staff politely and effectively 
  • Ability to adhere to policies in Staff manuals and given procedures 
  • Ability to travel to and from schools and community organizations for outreach independently. 

Note: Prior to the position’s start date, satisfactory completion of a criminal history, child abuse screening, and FBI fingerprinting prior to employment and every five years thereafter is required.
