Reference Assistant

P/T, 1 position open, 14.5 hours a week

The Parkland Community Library is currently accepting applications for a part-time Reference Assistant. We are looking for an enthusiastic, patron-focused new member of our team who is aligned with the library’s mission, committed to excellence, and who cultivates and preserves a culture of inclusion with a diverse team of employees. This position pays $17-21/hour based on education and experience.


  • Paid time off


Hours: Average of 14.5 hours/week; work day and evening shifts, and some Saturdays.
Work Location: In person, Allentown, PA 18104: Relocate before starting work (Required).

  • Tuesdays: 8:30am-2:30pm
  • Fridays: 12pm-6pm
  • Additionally, this position will work one Saturday monthly (8:30am-5pm; summers may be 8:30am-1pm).

Job Description

Title: Reference Assistant (P/T 14.5 hours per week)

Definition: A reference assistant is responsible for providing bibliographic and research assistance to library patrons, staff, and volunteers.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is required. MLS or MLIS is preferred. Public library experience is beneficial.

Accountability: Reports to the Head of Reference


  • Providing bibliographic research, technology, database, e-resources, and readers’ advisory assistance to patrons of all ages.
  • Aiding with collection development for adult print materials as required.
  • Promoting the usage of various library collections, services, and programming when appropriate.
  • Maintaining an orderly workspace and helping maintain a consistently organized and presentable library environment.
  • Occasionally, may be asked to provide substitute coverage at the Youth Services public desk.
  • Working independently and as a member of a team.
  • Work one Saturday per month.
  • Additional tasks as assigned.

General Responsibilities as a member of the Library Staff

  • Be familiar with library goals and relationships with the community.
  • Cooperate with other staff members and volunteers.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in continuing education by attending position-appropriate conferences, meetings, workshops, and webinars.
  • Participate in annual job performance evaluation.

Satisfactory completion of criminal history, child abuse screening, and FBI fingerprinting prior to employment and every five years thereafter are required.
