Annual Report
23-2024
We are pleased to announce that the 2023-2024 Annual Report is now available for viewing. We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our patrons for their continued support and participation in the various programs offered at the library. Your engagement plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant and enriching community.
As a non-profit organization, the library heavily relies on generous contributions from individuals like you to sustain our operations and advance our mission. All donations received help us uphold our commitment to providing valuable resources and services to the community.
Your support allows us to continue offering various programs, events, and services to educate, inspire, and connect individuals of all ages. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve you and are committed to enhancing everyone’s library experience. We encourage you to explore the Annual Report to learn more about the impact of your contributions and how your support is making a difference in the community.
A Note from our Director
Thank you to the community for all of your support!
We appreciate your feedback on the library survey, which has enabled us to update the Strategic Plan. Over the next three years, the library will be increasing the technology available to the public, the effort to bring in new patrons, materials, services, and community outreach to the public of all ages.
The library is proud to have grown from a grassroots organization to a thriving educational nonprofit. From storytimes to the Senior Coffee Club, the library aims to serve all ages for lifelong learning. Parkland Community Library has expanded physically and virtually to provide equal access to information. While the many materials and events provide entertainment, the purpose remains educational. Librarians strive to make learning fun!
Literacy takes many forms: basic, information, health, financial, civic, and social. The library has something for everyone! Thank you once again for your unwavering support and dedication to the library. With your continued partnership, we look forward to continuing our mission of promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement.

2023-2024 Annual Report, New to our Collection:
Multi-District Lehigh Valley Pocono Partnership:
In April 2024, the Lehigh Carbon Library Cooperative (LCLC) joined a partnership with the Lehigh Valley Library System and several libraries in Monroe County. This partnership grants patrons free access to over 20 library catalogs in northeastern Pennsylvania, opening up a catalog of over 1.4 million items!
Library of Things:
With the popularity of the Library of Things, we expanded our collection to include board games, puzzles, musical instruments, and the latest electronics, in addition to increasing our museum pass offerings. We are pleased to offer passes to the Academy of Natural Sciences, African American Museum (Philly), Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, National Liberty Museum, Penn Museum, and Philadelphia Magic Gardens.
Seed Library:
Parkland Community Library partnered with local business Sow Right Seeds to start our latest Seed Library service. We offered seed packs of herbs, flowers, and vegetables for our patrons to “check out.” Thank you to Burpee for a restock.
eResources
As most library cardholders know, a library card grants access to many digital resource databases, streaming apps, and reliable research tools. Since 2023, Parkland Community Library has added Kanopy, an ad-free streaming platform for independent films.
BookBrowse, an in-house guide to the best-rated fiction and nonfiction book reviews, Mango, offers language courses with adaptive learning technology and etiquette lessons.
Lastly, PCL has acquired CreativeBug. This exciting platform is an inspirational resource for crafters. Patrons can learn more about various arts, techniques, and skills from design experts to complete any personal projects they may have.
Programs, Partnerships, and Acknowledgement
In August, the book Mel Fell created a new StoryWalk® by the Library’s patio. StoryWalk® promotes early literacy, physical activity, and family time together in the library’s native plant garden.
The library has continued holding Medicare Counseling appointments in partnership with PA MEDI.
Thanks to a generous donation, PCL created the Idea STEM Lab. These funds enabled us to purchase a 3D printer, sewing machine, and Circuit craft machine for curious patrons to work on personal projects.
We added the Beanstack app for the Summer Reading Club to create a more seamless user experience. Patrons liked the ease of tracking activities and the convenience of using their devices. We are pleased to have 843 signups for the Summer Reading Club this year!
PA Forward Gold Star since 2018. This program encourages libraries to plan workshops and events to develop partnerships with organizations around Basic, Information, Civic and Social, Health, and Financial Literacy.
Out Reach
Parkland Community Library has continued its outreach mission by working with South Whitehall, North Whitehall, and Upper Macungie townships and hosting Stories in the Schools in the Summer with Parkland School District.
Fitness
Parkland Community Library was presented with the IronPigs Charities by Air Products donation of $2,000 to support Stretch and Grow fitness-related programs. We used this donation for events such as kids’ storytime yoga plus, teen dance, and yoga.
Science
In the spring, PCL handed out 500 solar glasses for the eclipse, which was made possible through a grant from the STAR Library Network (STAR Net). Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, NASA Office of STEM Engagement, and the NASA Science Mission Directorate.
PCL happily participated in the 15th Annual Neighborhood Forest Free Trees for Kids program. Patrons that RSVP’d for a tree picked up trees during Earth Week, April 22-30. We received a few tree updates from our patrons, which we shared on social media.
Grants
PCL was awarded two grants in September, made possible in part by federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
This includes Sustaining Success: Local Library Grants for Pennsylvania Family Place Libraries and Play & Grow Libraries. PCL has been awarded $2,500 for board books, parenting materials, and educational early childhood toys and Excellent and Equitable Youth Services Local Library Grant-$5,000 for diverse materials. Youth Services continued to add to the developmental aspects of the program and continued 1-2-3 Play with Me workshops where children engage in free play. In contrast, parents and industry professionals in child welfare can offer resources for various parental concerns.
Charity and Volunteering
The 2024 Unsung Heroes Award was presented to LuAnn Epstein by the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Service. LuAnn’s efforts help Parkland Community Library and The Friends of the Library promote our mission.
Parkland Community Library addressed some patrons’ inquiries about extending the Teen Volunteer Program year-round, moving away from a seasonal calendar.
Parkland Community Library is proud to support the Toys for Tots Foundation’s U.S. Marine Corps mission to provide a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas. We are happy to continue to be a collection site.
