Top Authors Round Out
the Most Circulated of Youth Services
Youth Services is proud to feature the beloved authors Mo Willems and Dav Pilkey. The hilarious Elephant & Piggie series comfortably holds the top three spots in circulation, bringing joy to many. Following closely, Dav Pilkey’s popular Captain Underpants and Dog Man series occupy the next three positions, underscoring their widespread appeal.

#2 About Dav Pilkey:
When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. He was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books—the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants.
Since then, Dav has written and illustrated several bestselling and award-winning children’s books, including the Caldecott Honor book The Paperboy. His Captain Underpants series and Dog Man graphic novels have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into many languages.
Dav lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, but his writing is inspired by children and adults around the world. His stories explore universally positive themes that celebrate the triumph of the good-hearted.
#1 Mo Willems Biography:
Mo Willems was born Maurice Charles Willems on February 11, 1968, in Des Plaines, Illinois, and grew up in New Orleans. Mo drew cartoons throughout his childhood and was a big fan of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts cartoons.
He also performed stand-up comedy in high school. After traveling and living in London as a comedian, Mo returned to the U.S. and attended college, studying film and animation and earning a degree from New York University. He then worked for the Children’s Television Workshop as an award-winning writer and animator for Sesame Street from 1994 to 2002.
In 2003, Mo wrote his first children’s picture book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, which received his first Caldecott Honor Award. Mo Willems is currently the author and illustrator of more than 50 books, including his most beloved characters, Knuffle Bunny, the Pigeon, and Elephant & Piggie. Their books are now translated into over 25 languages. Some of his books have been adapted into musicals and performed worldwide.
To date, Mo has received three Caldecott Honors, two Geisel Medals, five Geisel Honors, six Emmy Awards, and numerous #1 New York Times bestsellers. In 2019, Mo became the first Education Artist-in-Residence at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He lives in Massachusetts with his family.
